DBOX docking station and drone at a border surveillance tower

Border patrol

An autonomous drone system deployed for the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) — continuous monitoring, rapid response and secure data handling along the Lithuania–Belarus border.

Meeting modern demands in border security

Protecting the EU's external border requires continuous surveillance and fast response across vast, hard-to-reach areas. Traditional ground patrols are limited by terrain, poor nighttime visibility, and slow response times. Hybrid threats from Belarus — including balloons, illegal crossings, and low-flying drones — demand new approaches to border protection.

To address this, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT), together with DBOX and ATEA, has deployed an autonomous drone solution for continuous monitoring, rapid response, and secure data handling along the Lithuania–Belarus border.

The challenge

Forests, lakes, wetlands, and swamps — along with limited road access and long distances between patrol points — make consistent monitoring difficult.

Maintaining high alert levels throughout the night or across multiple stations requires either large security teams or advanced automation.

Manual patrols are slow, resource-heavy, and expose personnel to operational risk.

The solution

The DBOX autonomous docking station provides a fully automated, fixed-location aerial surveillance solution for border protection.

  • Installed at the Kabeliai border patrol post, multiple DBOX units can cover entire border sections
  • Missions are pre-planned or triggered automatically by camera-based alerts
  • With thermal and optical cameras, the system enables 24/7 monitoring, detects illegal crossings, tracks suspicious activity, and transmits live video to the VSAT command system
  • All flight data and recordings are securely stored for evidence and operational review
  • ATEA serves as the system integration partner, ensuring secure IT infrastructure, reliable communications, and smooth integration with existing VSAT systems and workflows

Why it works

Automated operations

Mission-planned and event-triggered flights launch automatically, with no manual intervention required.

Rapid first response

Airborne within seconds and over any border point in minutes — significantly faster than ground patrols.

Thermal surveillance

Reliable detection of people and vehicles at night and in low visibility, with a full aerial overview.

Complex terrain coverage

Effective monitoring of forests, lakes, wetlands and swamps that vehicles cannot reach.

Evidence collection

All mission data is recorded and stored automatically for investigations and legal procedures.

EU and NATO aligned technology stack

Built in Lithuania on EU and NATO partner technology — fully non-Chinese and compliant with European standards.
